The official nominations for the 2019 Emmy Awards have been officially announced, with five entries competing in the “Outstanding Original Interactive Programming” category, three of which are VR entries. At least one is still online and can be experienced for free (the others have been taken offline or require downloads, subscriptions, and special equipment).
A total of seven works were nominated in 2018, compared to five this year. It is worth noting that the official announcement of the final winner will be made during the awards ceremony on September 22, 2019.
First Man on the Moon VR is based on the 2018 film First Man on the Moon. In this entry, which was primarily used to promote the film, you will be on Apollo 11 and experience the process from launch liftoff to landing on the moon through the eyes of the astronauts.
NASA’s VR experience was also nominated, and you can still view the “NASA InSight Mission Control Mars Landing Celebration (360 video) for free via YouTube. The 360-degree video lasts about 3:35 seconds and was recorded at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory when the Insight rover officially landed on Mars on Nov. 26, 2018. You don’t need any headset or device to watch the video directly, just a mouse to experience the full 360-degree view.
The nominated Oculus experience, Traveling While Black, requires Samsung Gear VR, Oculus Rift or Oculus Go to view. Traveling While Black” is produced by Felix & Paul Studios, which won an award in this category for “The People’s House – Inside The White House With Barack and Michelle Obama” won an Emmy in this category. Traveling While Black” is directed by Academy Award-winning director Roger Ross Williams, while viewers will be immersed in the history of the civil rights struggle of black Americans.
In addition, Star Wars: Vader Immortal Episode 1 and Wolves in the Walls have each had their nominations for the 2019 Emmy Awards Outstanding Innovation in Interactive Media announced on Twitter, but are currently on the The Emmy Awards official list does not have these two works, and we will update these two works again when there is further confirmed information.
